Well, I might as well start at the beginning. I grew up in a Christian family. I grew up going to church twice a week, every week. I went to a Christian school up through sixth grade. I really didn’t know anything different than the “Christian” society I was living in. I was simply going along with the motions and didn’t do anything out of the ordinary to improve my relationship with God. I pretty much just went to church because Sunday was “church day” and that’s just what we always did. It was kinda like going to school; I went because I was “supposed” to.  I was saved when I was five years old at AWANA’s. But it wasn’t until seventh grade at summer camp when I was told that it’s not my parents’ faith that saves me, but it’s my own faith that sets me apart. That day at summer camp I rededicated my life to Christ. Last summer I was finally baptized!

Since then, I have been on five short trips to Mexico with my youth group. The boys build a home for a family while the girls put on a vacation Bible school for the kids of the town. I love being with kids so this trip is something I always look forward to. It’s amazing to see how happy and satisfied these kids are even though they live in a town stricken by poverty.

For the past two summers, I have gone with my youth group on what we call West Coast Missions Tour. We have a choir, a stomp team, a juggling team and a Cachi Bachi Band (trash can band). We spend two weeks going from Seattle down to San Francisco. Our primary focus on that trip is homeless people. We go to parks and shelters spending time and performing for them. We try our best to love them and talk to them when no one else will. I’ve learned a ton from those trips. I’ve learned a lot about myself and also saw how God can move in the hearts of people who are so terribly broken.

This summer I wanted to take what I’ve learned and go! God opened a door for me this upcoming summer and laid this trip upon my heart. I am sooo excited to go! I just can’t stop thinking about it! My biggest concern right now is hoping that the funds come in. I know that if God wants me to go, He’ll make it possible. So for now, I’m just waiting to see what comes next!

Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:3 NLT

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.”

Matthew 16:24 NLT

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

Philippians 2:13 NLT

…And how can they believe in one whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Romans 10:14-15

  1. Kameryn,

That sounds like an exciting ministry opportunity to work with the homeless population here in the US! I love your line, “We try our best to love them and talk to them when no one else will” because I also believe that LOVE is what it’s all about! It will be so great to see you in action on the field in the DR!
